Week of May 11th:


Ms. Vega’s Third Grade News
May 11, 2015

This week…

*Reading:  Students will continue to work on a non-fiction text and sentence stems to participate in their assigned discussion.  Students will use their non-fiction reading skills to comprehend, discuss, and defend their thoughts on topics, issues, and or themes from non-fiction articles.  Students will use their non-fiction reading skills to have small group discussions.  Wordly Wise words for this week are:  adopt, arouse, arrange, cell, infection, influence, injure, pattern, series, vision.   

*Writing:  Students will work on their final draft of their informational writing piece.

*Math:  Students will begin unit 6.  Unit 6 focuses on geometry.  In this unit, students will review and learn about lines, line segments, rays, endpoints, and the relationship among those elements.  Students will construct angles, polygons, prisms, and pyramids.  The unit 6 pre-test will be on Tuesday to help with student groupings and student background knowledge.

*Social Studies:  Students will be introduced to the Southwest Region.  Students will work on states and capitals of the Southwest Region.  Later in the week, they’ll “tour” the region. 

*Science:  Students will continue their unit on Plant Pals from The Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum.

Reminders:
* Science Fair-We are well into Science Fair!  Please see the packet that was sent home on regarding expectations, due dates, and date of science fair.  If you have any questions feel free to contact me.  Students should begin conducting their experiment this week!  Please have students turn any work that has not been completed and or turned in (see timeline of due dates).
* Students should be practicing their math facts everyday!! Students should be building fact power with addition, subtraction, and multiplication facts!!! Students may do flashcards, games online, Think Through Math, or any other type of fact practice.
* Weather permitting; students will go outside for recess, please make sure your child is dressed appropriately!
*Please make sure your child wears gym shoes on Thursdays and Fridays!
*Homework is always dependent on what we get done in class that day!  Please refer to your child’s agenda for the most up to date homework assignments!!!
